I don’t know which one, if any are correct. They wanted New Years day to push a “new era in Doctor Who” idea/metaphor. They simply want to distance themselves from “Christmas” and all the associated pc problems. They don’t want to lose viewers to other channels when it comes on, with Christmas day being one of the biggest days of the TV year. The BBC have no faith in Doctor Who to hold an audience anymore. Theories I have read on the subject include: Let’s be honest the higher ups in The BBC make the decisions ultimately, so Chibnall may just be a convenient scapegoat. Now I seem to be giving Chibnall all the blame at the minute. For that matter, why is he in charge of the show, if he is unable to come up with a Christmas day idea in the first place. Are we to believe that the guy who is in charge of the show couldn’t tweak it to make it fit for a Christmas day slot? If that’s true why is he in charge of the show. They are making an episode for New Years Day after all. It’s about a feel good factor that even in this troubled world there is The Doctor.ĭo I buy this story about running out of ideas? No, not for one second. It’s about chilling out and watching good triumph over evil (with tinsel in the background and maybe a Christmas dinner thrown in). It’s about sitting down with your family or in my case getting home and away from mine lol. It’s not about having Santa, snow and Scrooge rammed into the episode that is important. The Christmas Invasion was also a damned good Christmas episode for the same reason, in fact it’s one of my most watched episodes. There were a few festive nods but it was mostly just a good adventure. Usually because instead of making an episode that happens around the festive period they feel the need to either remake a festive film favourite or they just rip off Alien and crowbar Santa into it. Now let me make one thing clear, as a whole the Christmas specials have recently tended to be a bit naff. Chris Chibnall does not have enough of an imagination for one single festive themed story, apparently. Why have they decided to call an end to it? Well according to many sources the show creators have run out of ideas. So my tradition of slouching down into the sofa and escaping from the festive stress in the time vortex is at an end. There will be no Christmas special this year.
